 | SAN-EPISODE # 2845 DATED 09 DECEMBER 2008 WELCOME TO SOUTH ASIA NEWS LINE. I AM SAKAL BHATT WITH THE DAY’S NEWS….. THE TOP STORIES … HEADLINES ARRESTS WON'T AFFECT US, JIHAD WILL CONTINUE SAYS LASHKAR-E-TOIBA PAKISTAN AUTHORITIES PLACE MILITANT LEADER MAULANA MASOOD AZHAR UNDER HOUSE ARREST AND …… IT IS A SOMBER EID FOR MUSLIMS IN INDIA PTC 1: NOW THE NEWS IN DETAIL…… PAKISTAN AUTHORITIES HAVE PLACED RESTRICTIONS ON THE MOVEMENT OF MAULANA MASOOD AZHAR, CHIEF OF THE OUTLAWED JAISH-E-MOHAMMAD, BY CONFINING HIM TO HIS HOME. THE MOVE CAME DESPITE ISLAMABAD TURNING DOWN INDIA’S DEMAND FOR HANDING AZHAR AND TWO OTHER FUGITIVES OVER. VO1: Sources said Masood Azhar’s activities have been restricted in the wake of the Indian government’s recent demand to hand him over to New Delhi. Azhar has been confined to his multi-storey home which also serves as his headquarter in Model Town area of Bahawalpur. Azhar was being held in an Indian jail for terror activities but was released along with two other terrorists in exchange for passengers of an Indian Airlines flight hijacked from Nepalese capital Kathmandu to Kandahar in Southern Afghanistan in 1999. The terrorist leader had since been wanted by New Delhi for his alleged involvement in various terror attacks including the 2001 attack on Indian Parliament which brought the two neighbors to the brink of another war. Pakistan’s Foreign Office had on Monday turned down India’s demand to hand over Azhar, and two Indian fugitives Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon. The rejection came after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Defence chaired by the Prime Minister. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said even if allegations were proved against any suspect, they will not be handed over to India. The demand for extradition had been made in a demarche handed over by New Delhi in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks. Meanwhile, the ‘quiet crackdown’ on militant groups is expected to continue for the next few days. The raids on terror camps in Pakistan came amid mounting international pressure led by Washington to act “urgently” and decisively against terrorists operating from Pakistan territory. Forces had on Monday arrested Lashker-e-Taiba commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi along with over a dozen militants in the crackdown. Indian investigators say he masterminded Mumbai attacks and is said to have been in contact with the 10 terrorists during the three day siege. The camp of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a charity front of the Lashkar in Muzaffarabad has been sealed but its sprawling 75 acre campus near the Indian border has not been raided. Washington said that Pakistan’s efforts now should be to work with all interested parties to make sure that no future attacks "emanate from Pakistani soil" Last week, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in efforts to ease tensions in the region had asked Islamabad to mount a "robust" and "effective" response to the Mumbai assault PTC 2: BUT A LASHKAR-E-TOIBA MILITANT LEADER HAS SAID THAT THE ARREST OF THE JAMAAT-UD-DAWA ACTIVISTS, INCLUDING ZAKI-U-REHMAN LAKHVI, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF MUZAFFARABAD, WILL NOT STOP THE MILITANT OUTFIT FROM CONTINUING WITH ITS ACTIVITIES. WE ARE STILL WELL-ORGANIZED AND ACTIVE, THE WASHINGTON TIMES QUOTED THE LASHKAR COORDINATOR, AS SAYING DURING AN INTERACTION AT A SAFE HOUSE NEAR LAHORE. HE ALSO CLAIMED THAT DESPITE BEING OUTLAWED THE GROUP HAS "HUGE STRENGTH" AND IS CONCENTRATED IN PAKISTAN'S TRIBAL AREAS ON THE BORDER WITH AFGHANISTAN. THE TERROR GROUP HAD CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUNDREDS OF FIDAYEEN ATTACKS ON MILITARY AND GOVERNMENT TARGETS IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR. BUT THE AUTHORITIES HAVE BLAMED DOZENS OF ATTACKS ELSEWHERE IN INDIA ALSO ON LASHKAR-E- TOIBA. PTC 3: THE TERROR ATTACK THAT STRUCK MUMBAI HAS ADDED TO THE WOES OF THE TOURISM SECTOR, WHICH HAD SEEN A DROP OF 30 PERCENT DUE TO THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRUNCH. ALTHOUGH LIFE IS BACK TO NORMAL, FEAR STILL PERVADES. VO1: Many business visitors, disturbed by images of the siege at the two luxury hotels in Mumbai, have cancelled or postponed their trip to India. Post 26/11 travel agents have reported a drop of 30-40 percent in group travel bookings. Tour planners fear that if countries continue to issue advisories against traveling to India, tourism could be severely affected. UPSOUND/ RAMESH MANSUKHANI CEO, Venture Travel Services TRANSCRIPTION: I foresee there is going to be a lot of cancellations coming from all over (about) coming to India. And where there has been a lot of views from all over - you see the consulates have been warning the tourists not to go to India. So it's going to have a big impact. VO2: The worst hit is the leisure travel segment. A number of tourists were expected to fly into Mumbai to travel to Kochi for the Volvo Ocean race. But last month’s events led to large scale cancellations. Kerala government had hoped the visitors would explore the state which National Geographic Traveler had described as one of the '10 paradises of the world'. India’s best known travel destination, Goa has been a popular choice for many to celebrate the holidays. With Christmas less than three weeks away, the tourist hot spot is yet to gear up. 2.5 million visitors flock to the western state annually, mostly during Christmas and New Year. PTC 4: BUT THE PREVAILING FEAR DID NOT DETER THE ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM FROM RETURNING TO RESUME THEIR TOUR. THE ONE-DAY SERIES BETWEEN INDIA AND ENGLAND WAS CUT SHORT FOLLOWING THE MUMBAI TERROR STRIKE LAST MONTH. ENGLAND RETURNED HOME AFTER THE LAST TWO MATCHES WERE CALLED OFF WITH THE HOSTS LEADING 5-0. THE TEAM WHICH ARRIVED IN SOUTHERN CHENNAI IN TWO BATCHES FROM ABU DHABI WAS ESCORTED TO THEIR HOTEL BY AROUND 50 COMMANDOS. TEAM MEMBERS SAID IT WAS TOUGH FOR PLAYERS TO DISMISS SECURITY CONCERNS BUT SAID THEY HAD BEEN UNITED IN THEIR DECISION TO GO AHEAD WITH THE TOUR. THE FIRST TEST, BEGINNING ON THURSDAY, WAS SWITCHED TO CHENNAI FROM WESTERN AHMEDABAD AND THE SECOND TO MOHALI FROM MUMBAI. PTC 5: MUSLIMS ACROSS THE WORLD CELEBRATED EID-UL-ADHA THAT MARKS THE END OF THE PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY CITY OF MECCA. BUT IN INDIA THE MOOD WAS SOMBER IN THE WAKE OF RECENT TERROR ATTACKS IN MUMBAI. VO1: As a mark of protest Mumbikars decided to tone down their Eid celebrations. Denouncing the attacks, the clerics organized sermons ahead of the prayers. Many said they felt saddened by the mayhem and prayed for the victims. UPSOUND/JAVED AHMED Resident, Mumbai TRANSLATION: We are having a low key celebration because we don’t like to celebrate Eid without our brothers who died in the attacks. They are not with us , so we are keeping the festivities subdued. VO2: Meanwhile hundreds thronged the Jama Masjid Mosque in southern Hyderabad to offer prayers. Security was stepped up in the wake of the prevailing security situation in the country. Clerics and scholars called upon faithfuls to live up to the ideals of supreme sacrifice and faith embodied in the message of Eid. VO3: Hundreds braved cold weather conditions in capital Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir to offer prayers. People in the Kashmir Valley wished for peace and better relations between India and Pakistan. UPSOUND/ WASEEM Resident, Srinagar TRANSLATION: We have gathered to offer prayers on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Adha. We prayed for better relations between the neighbors India and Pakistan and also that peace and unity prevails in Kashmir. VO4: In national capital New Delhi many heeded a call by community elders to wear black bands as a mark of protest. Many said 26/11 had left a big impact on their lives. UPSOUND/ IMAMUL REHMAN Resident, New Delhi TRANSCRIPTION: This time around we are not celebrating if I could say that you know because what has happened in Mumbai has affected entire Country as a whole we are no different from people living in India. VO5: Eid-Ul-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice, is traditionally marked by slaughtering of a sheep or cow, a portion of which is distributed to the poor. The festival conveys that sacrifice is supreme PTC 6: FOR MOST KOLKATANS IT WAS AS IF GOD HAD DESCENDED ON THEIR CITY……MOVED BY THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE OF FANS ARGENTINE SOCCER LEGEND DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA SAID HE MIGHT CONSIDER HELPING INDIAN FOOTBALL BY BECOMING ITS BRAND AMBASSADOR. VO1: Kolkata couldn’t sleep on the weekend… It was gripped by an unusual fever…. Around 30,000 thronged the airport early on Saturday to welcome the soccer legend to the eastern city. Another 100,000 people turned up to catch a glimpse of Maradona at the Salt Lake Stadium. He was mobbed wherever he went, during his two day trip. UPSOUND/ SANJAY Maradona Fan TRANSCRIPTION: Today is a historic day and a proud moment not only in the history of Kolkata but India as well, that such a great sports personality like Maradona is visiting our country VO2: While laying the foundation stone of a football academy, Maradona played to the gallery. He ran down from the stage, blew kisses and danced to the tune of a band that had cut an album dedicated to the enigmatic player. UPSOUND/ DIEGO MARADONA Coach, Argentina TRANSLATION: I didn't have any idea that in this country the people are crazy about football and they play very good football and I'm really happy to see the zest that these people have and the passion with which they get training in football. VO3: Maradona who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup triumph delighted the crowd by displaying his mastery over the game at an exhibition match. He also took time off from his hectic tour to visit the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity to pay homage to Mother Teresa. PTC 7: IT WAS A COMPETITION WHICH HAD THE MOST UNLIKELY CONTENDERS. THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN NEPAL HAS ATTRACTED AS MANY AS EIGHT HEAVY WEIGHT TEAMS FROM ACROSS THE WORLD VO1: Man and beast teamed up to play out one of the World's most unusual Championships. The 27th World Elephant Polo Championships which was held in Meghauly, 75 miles south west of capital Kathmandu attracted players from USA, Scotland, India and England. The sport was founded 27 years ago by British adventurers and the rules have evolved over the past two decades and the game now has its own governing body the World Elephant Polo Association. The smaller, younger elephants are the fastest and are primarily used in an attacking position. UPSOUND/ ANDREW YOUNG AUSTRALIAN PLAYER TRANSLATION Boy, when you're out here on the elephant it really is hard work. You know you're swinging a stick 12 foot long. Hard work on the wrists hard work on the elephant, hard work on the mahout, lot of fun, lot of fun. VO2: Mahouts control the elephants, whilst the players, seated behind them, concentrate on wielding extra long polo sticks. Communication between player, mahout and elephant is crucial. UPSOUND/ PETER PRENTICE SCOTLAND PLAYER TRANSCRIPTION: Well you know they've been playing here since 1982 and each of these elephants and the mahouts have got long standing relationships and they practice throughout the year. They just know what they're doing. It's their natural sport here in Nepal. They don't really know about football and this is their World Cup. VO3: After a week of intensive competition, the final challenge was between England's Team Air Tuskers and last year’s winners, the Chivas team from Scotland. The Tusker's however proved to be too strong for the defending champions, in this game of jumbo proportions. PTC 8: NOW A QUICK LOOK AT THE WEATHER ACROSS SOUTH ASIA… CLOSING: WELL THAT’S THE WAY IT WAS IN SOUTH ASIA THIS EVENING… THE TOP STORIES ONCE AGAIN… ARRESTS WON'T AFFECT US, JIHAD WILL CONTINUE SAYS LASHKAR-E-TOIBA PAKISTAN AUTHORITIES PLACE MILITANT LEADER MAULANA MASOOD AZHAR UNDER HOUSE ARREST AND …… IT IS A SOMBER EID FOR MUSLIMS IN INDIA THAT’S ALL IN TONIGHT’S EDITION. WE WILL SEE YOU SAME TIME TOMORROW. GOODNIGHT
