  5. How Cybercriminals Steal Money
Google Tech Talks June, 16 2008 ABSTRACT Attend this session and learn how you can prevent today's most significant data security vulnerabilities—the kind that leave businesses open to fraud that ranges from capturing tens of millions of credit card numbers to stealing money from bank accounts to constructing next-generation botnets. We'll review how cross-site request forgery, cross-site script inclusion and SQL injection attacks work and discuss their impact on Web 2.0, AJAX, mashup and social networking applications. We'll present industry-wide statistics on security vulnerabilities, cover emerging security trends and discuss the current state of security education. Then we'll tell you how to defend against security attacks and how to modify your software development process to achieve security, and we'll recommend certification programs, books and organizations that can help you secure your applications. Speaker: Neil Daswani Neil Daswani has served in a variety of research , development, teaching, and managerial roles at Google, Stanford University , DoCoMo USA Labs, Yodlee, and Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies). While at Stanford, Neil cofounded the Stanford Center Professional Development (SCPD) Security Certification Program ( http://proed.stanford.edu/?security). His areas of expertise include security, wireless data technology, and peer-to-peer systems. He has published extensively in these areas, frequently gives talks at industry and academic conferences, and has been granted several U.S. patents. He received a Ph.D. and a master's in computer science from Stanford University, and earned a bachelor's in computer science with honors with distinction from Columbia University. Neil is also the lead author of "Foundations of Security: What Every Programmer Needs To Know" (published by Apress; ISBN 1590597842; http://tinyurl.com/33xs6g )

  7. Nokia Distinguished Lecture: Eric Feron on Control Systems S
Nokia Distinguished Lecture: Eric Feron on Control Systems Software Assurance Eric Feron School of Aerospace Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology Abstract: Control systems has historically been concerned with the development of provably good control software specifications for cyber-physical systems. Closely associated with control systems engineering, one can find extensive tools derived from numerical analysis, dynamical system theory, complex analysis, linear algebra and other fields. Comparatively speaking, little or no attention has been spent on control software, leaving it aside as an "implementation issue". In this talk, we will motivate the need to look more closely at control system software. After pointing out the commonalities existing between invariant theory and Lyapunov stability theory, we will outline some basic techniques that may help make control systems software more easily and independently verifiable. We will also describe ongoing efforts aimed at the case-by-case verification of auto coded software. Bio: Eric Feron is the Dutton-Ducoffe Professor of Aerospace Software Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to that, he has been on the faculty of MITs department of Aeronautics and Astronautics for 12 years. He holds his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Ecole Polytechnique, France, Ecole Normale Supérieure, France and Stanford University. Eric Ferons interests are to use fundamental concepts of control systems, optimization and computer science to address important problems in aerospace engineering, including: Aerobatic control of unmanned aerial vehicles, air traffic control systems and aerospace system certification. Eric Feron has published two books and several research papers; his former research students are distributed throughout academia, government and industry. He is an advisor to the Academy of Technologies.

  8. Harry Shearer
Harry Shearer Cody's Books - Berkeley, CA Harry Shearer takes aim with Not Enough Indians.Meet the residents of Gammage, NY, a town so far down on its luck that WalMart would rather site its new store in the middle of a lake than in Gammage. Mayor Zorn and the rest of the town council are on the verge of declaring the town bankrupt, when inspiration strikes. Why not petition for Indian Tribal status and open a casino? With the gears in Washington appropriately greased, the ink is barely dry on their Tribal certification when Gammage is transformed into the sovereign nation of the long-lost Filaquonsett tribe. It's only a matter of trading in their housecoats and galoshes for buckskins and moccasins, and boning up on their tribal lore and ceremonial dances, until the "Council of Elders" is ready to import some casino backing and gaming know-how...Funny, smart, antic, and scathing, "Not Enough Indians" is a brilliant ensemble piece mixing misadventure, hilarity, and the great American dream, from actor, musician, SNL cast member, voice of The Simpsons, and now novelist Harry Shearer.Carl Hiaasen writes, "Harry Shearer has one of America's great satirical minds, and he's in beautifully wicked form with Not Enough Indians."
